People patent the darndest things

I was surfing the wiki today and came across some pretty bizarre things... at the patent office.
So, here's another "what the?" (geez... any more of these and I'm gonna have to make it a regular!)

We normally think of patents as being legal things which stop you from copying Professor Bizarro's Death Ray, with meticulous schematics detailing all the small devices and circuitry.

But there are a lot of patents out there and some are simpler than you think.

In the US, in 1977, someone actually patented.... THE COMB-OVER.
US. Patent 4,022,227
Be careful when styling your hair... you could be forced to pay royalties!
(On a side note here, the guys who patented it in the first place actually won the Ig Nobel prize for it in 2004 [link].)

Here's another one. Someone, in as late as 1999, patented A SANDWICH.
US. Patent 6,004,596
A crustless "peanut-butter and jelly" sandwich to be precise. And it's certainly not a laughing matter. From Wikipedia:
The J.M. Smucker Co. bought the patent from the inventors and developed a commercial product based on the patent called Uncrustables. Smuckers then made a US$17 million dollar investment in a new factory to produce the product. By 2005, sales of the product grew to $60 million a year with a 20% per year growth rate. These sales correspond to the creation of 1,500 new jobs assuming an average yearly wage of $30,000.
It's big business out there in the sandwich world!

Definitely bizarre patents out there. That's so weird about the comb-over. I bet there are more weird ones out there too. LOL
